Hello. Nearly 2 Years late..

Nearly two years since I last wrote a blog post, shameful!

So What has happened in the last two years? How to quickly sum up.

Staff. I guess the main thing as business owners we have seen change over that course of time is staff. Inevitably in this industry people move on to elsewhere, one problem of being an independent is there sadly isn’t much of a ladder to climb. There are fewer people choosing the industry as a profession, particularly chefs and with long hot days and unsociable hours you can see why. We had a period of being very short staffed which caused a lot of stress to other members.. Fortunately, we had 3 ex staff members return to us, one of them now totalling 5 years service. They have become like family and I realised the importance in having a happy team in place.

Sadler Gate and The Cathedral Quarter. We have seen yet more restaurants / bars and shop open and close in the last 2 years. Derby’s Award winning ‘Best restaurant’ 2 years running sadly closed its doors earlier this year, they were barely a minutes walk away. All of them independents. I believe it is mainly down to saturation, the Intu centre has opened ( and closed ) more restaurants than Derby needs. The centre has multiple functions now, although personally I think it feels like a prison, but you can dine, play golf, shop and go bowling al under one roof. And people want convenience. My thoughts and obvious dislike of the Intu Centre are maybe not for todays post. It obviously has its place, but everyone needs to visit the high street every so often before it disappears.

Events. To end on a positive, one major change in the last few years is the decision to push events and outside catering. This is related to the previous 2 paragraphs in the sense that we are having to come up with new ideas and events to bring people down, we cannot just rest on our laurels anymore in a more competitive market. And the second being we have wonderfully positive staff happy to get on board and do something different.
