Blog One. What a fun weekend.

Welcome to The Wonky Table Blog! This is my first post, well not my first, I started one when we first opened ( 7 years ago ) but then got writers block. Its taken me a while to get over it..

And what better time to start one again but with a shiny new website Р Thanks Jon!

I also really wanted to start one to share news with loyal customers of Wonky, show a bit of our personalities, our plans and passion. So I hope you’ll stick around and enjoy the read and Wonky Table ride.

It’s been a fun filled few weeks, We’ve had so many different events on, Saturday 27th May, saw us participate in the eagerly anticipated Bustler Market, Derbys first ever street food market. We have catered in several markets before but probably not one quite as ‘trendy’ as this one. Situated in an unused warehouse by the bus station, Bustler Market oozed industrial-chic upcycled feel. Oil drum tables, polished concrete floors, exposed cables and festoon lighting celebrated up cycling. It definitely had a quirky hipster vibe to it.

After a very successful social media campaign any doubts about its location were quashed as several thousand hungry Derbians walked through the door. With many stall holders selling out, I’d imagine there will be long waiting lists to get a pitch again.

We took along our youngest and cheekiest member of staff Jamie to help out.

Our menu consisted of Wonky Table favourites and twists on current dishes.

‘Sausage, Egg and Beans’

A fun’grown up version using homemade Spicy, Smoky, BBQ Beans, Chorizo and a Poached Egg.

A Halloumi Sandwich with Beetroot, Chick Pea Patties and Tomato Chutney.

‘Wonky Mess’ Eaton Mess laced with Rose Water, Pistachios and fragrant Rose Petals.

I’ve had numerous requests for the Wonky Mess dessert, so i may put it on our menu. This is what I love about food markets and outside catering – we can trial dishes, hand-pick customer favourites and put them on our menu. As food traders, we also got to sample lots of other delicious food, meet new people whilst promoting the restaurant and bond with staff for an ultimately fun and productive day out.

Obviously, I need to shout about the outside catering bit now..

We are indeed available for outdoor catering for all kinds of functions, using our team at the restaurant we can create a bespoke menu for whatever it is you are planning. From Outside festivals to an intimate social dinner at home. Also watch out for our ‘Wonky Wagon’ – Work in process.

The following day (Sunday 28th May) We hosted a Pop Up Vintage Event with the lovely Yvonne Bowman, The downstairs restaurant became a treasure trove of wonders, jimmy choo bags, adidas jackets, art deco brooches, books, vintage tins and cocktail glasses. Yvonne and her family have participated in many vintage markets over the years after closing her shop on Green Lane, just before the Intu took over ( We won’t go there in this post ) but I’m secretly hoping she will look for a place on Sadler Gate or The Strand.

Next time we plan to combine the event with a ladies night which we will bring back over the Summer holidays, something we did last year that went down very well.

Until next time. I hope you’re all having a blooming marvelous weekend.

Holly
